Emergency Contraception (Morning after pills)

You have had sex without using contraception, or think that your contraception might have failed, perhaps because a condom has split or you have forgotten to take your pill, taking emergency contraception (EC) will usually prevent a pregnancy.

EC is sometimes known as the 'morning after pill', but this is misleading because it can be used up to several days after sex. There are two types of emergency contraception available:

Emergency pills -
You must take the pills within three days (72 hours) of unprotected sex, but they are more effective the sooner you take them.

These pills are safe only if you use them the right way. It should not be used regularly.

The risks due to indiscriminate use of ECP s are irregular periods and in some cases even infertility.

These pills are not fool-proof as ads expect us to believe.

An IUD -
This must be fitted within 5 days of unprotected sex.

Combined oral contraceptives (Pills)

Can be very effective if taken regularly every day If you miss a pill, take it as soon as you can. Then take the next pill at your regular time, even if you take 2 pills at once or on the same day.

Safe, serious problems are very rare.

Side effects sometimes occur such as upset stomach (nausea), light bleeding between periods, very light menstrual periods, occasional missed periods, mild headaches, tender breasts, and moodiness. these side effects are not dangerous and generally become less or stop in a few months.

Please come back to clinic at once, if you have severe, constant pain in the chest, leg, or belly, or very bad headaches, if you see flashing lights or zigzag lines, or if your skin or eyes become unusually yellow (jaundice).

Pills do not prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including HIV/AIDS. If you think you might get an STD, use condoms regularly along with your pills.
